Ohio OTP Tax

June 29th, 2013

Ohio this week authorized an increase in the sin tax on cigarillos, marking an incredible moment for the cigar industry. In a heavily Republican-controlled statehouse, the Republicans, who  are supposed to be friends of cigars, decided to increase taxes on smaller cigars. True, manufacturers, like me, are not affected by this all that much. But what this does show is that all state legislatures, no matter who is in power, are willing to increase tobacco taxes to fuel their inability to cut useless spending.

Be on the lookout for state legislatures using tobacco as a scapegoat to avoid the hard cuts they can’t make. I know I will be.
